After founding AQR Law in 2014, Jim remains connected with the firm as Senior Counsel.
Jim has had a varied career in progressive legal work. He was called to the BC Bar in 1980 and then worked as general counsel, director of planning, and acting executive director at the Legal Services Society of BC, providing free legal services to low-income people in the days before the BC Liberal government decimated legal aid.
He has also held roles as the Executive Director of the BC Public Interest Advocacy Centre, the Business Manager at Vancouver Municipal and Regional Employees' Union (now CUPE local 15), the Legal Director at the Hospital Employees' Union, and the Legal and Regulatory Director at COPE Local 378 (MoveUP).
Jim has special expertise in regulatory law, and has a wealth of experience representing communities, low-income consumers, and workers at the BC Utilities Commission and the CRTC. He comments regularly in the media on issues related to utility rates and energy policy.
Jim is an Honourary Member of CUPE Local 15 and an Honourary Life Member of the BC Freedom of Information and Privacy Association.
Jim divides his time between Chá7elkwnech (Gambier Island) and Vancouver. He enjoys playing and composing tunes for Irish fiddle, rambling in the forest with his dog, and spending time with his four wonderful grandchildren.
